Speed Performance

Proton VPN reached 510 Mbps download and 380 Mbps upload on our 1 Gbps test line in London. Latency to the nearest server measured 20ms — solid for everyday use. We test each provider across four server locations at both peak (6–9 PM local) and off-peak (2–4 AM) hours and average the results.

Proton VPN's standard servers delivered reasonable speeds, but enabling Secure Core (double-hop routing via Switzerland or Iceland) cut throughput to around 180 Mbps — a 65 percent reduction. For everyday browsing and streaming this is acceptable, but large file downloads and 4K streaming over Secure Core will feel sluggish. Standard servers are recommended unless your threat model specifically requires the additional routing layer.

Streaming Performance

Proton VPN's streaming capability is adequate for the major platforms. Netflix worked from US, UK, and Japanese servers in most sessions. BBC iPlayer and Disney+ authenticated reliably. Hulu and DAZN were inconsistent — around half of sessions succeeded. Enabling Secure Core for streaming is not advisable; the additional latency causes buffering on 4K content. Standard servers are recommended for media use.

Security

Proton VPN's apps are fully open-source, and their audited code is available on GitHub. All connections use AES-256-GCM (OpenVPN) or ChaCha20-Poly1305 (WireGuard). The Stealth protocol uses obfuscation to disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS — useful in restrictive networks. The Stealth protocol (obfuscation) is selectable from the connection settings. Split tunneling works at the application level. IPv6 leak protection is enabled by default. The app requires a reboot after installing on Windows 10 to complete driver installation — a minor friction point.
