Speed Performance
NordVPN reached 890 Mbps download and 650 Mbps upload on our 1 Gbps test line in London. Latency to the nearest server measured 8ms — excellent for gaming and real-time applications. We test each provider across four server locations at both peak (6–9 PM local) and off-peak (2–4 AM) hours and average the results.
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK (nearest) | 891 Mbps | 648 Mbps | 8 ms |
| US East | 820 Mbps | 601 Mbps | 78 ms |
| Germany | 855 Mbps | 630 Mbps | 22 ms |
| Australia | 540 Mbps | 390 Mbps | 270 ms |
NordLynx — Nord's WireGuard implementation — delivered the highest absolute speeds of any VPN in our 13-provider benchmark. The UK server saturated our 1 Gbps test connection, capping at 891 Mbps download. OpenVPN on the same server fell to around 320 Mbps, illustrating the performance gap between protocols. Peak-hour degradation was minimal; speeds dropped by only 5–7 percent during the busiest evening periods.
Streaming Performance
NordVPN offers the most comprehensive streaming library access in our benchmark. Dedicated SmartPlay DNS technology automatically optimises server selection for streaming, so you don't need to manually hunt for a working server. Netflix worked across 15+ regions including US, UK, Japan, France, Germany, and Australia. BBC iPlayer, Hulu, DAZN, and Disney+ all authenticated reliably. Our only failure was a niche regional sports broadcaster — otherwise NordVPN is as close to universal streaming as any VPN currently delivers.

Security
NordVPN's security stack centres on AES-256-GCM for OpenVPN connections and ChaCha20-Poly1305 for NordLynx. The Double VPN feature routes traffic through two sequentially encrypted servers — useful when a single server's trustworthiness is uncertain. Threat Protection blocks malicious domains, trackers, and ad scripts before they reach the browser. Kill switch testing confirmed immediate traffic cutoff. We verified using ipleak.net — all DNS queries resolved through the VPN's own resolver with no ISP leakage. AES-256-GCM is classified as Approved under NIST SP 800-77 — the definitive guide to IPsec VPN security.
Privacy & Logging Policy
NordVPN is incorporated in Panama. Panama operates no mandatory data-retention laws and participates in neither the 5-Eyes nor 14-Eyes intelligence-sharing alliances. This combination makes it one of the most privacy-friendly jurisdictions available to VPN operators. The privacy policy prohibits logging connection timestamps, originating IP addresses, outbound IP addresses, and traffic content. An pwc independent audit has verified the no-logs claim. Following a past server breach (disclosed proactively by NordVPN), the company undertook a security restructuring, moved to RAM-only servers in colocated data centres, and added the independently verified no-logs posture. The 10-device limit and consistent audit programme make NordVPN a strong choice for households.
Windows App Experience
NordVPN's Windows app has been significantly redesigned — the current version is among the most polished in the market. The main screen shows your current IP, server load, and a large connect button. The Meshnet feature (private encrypted networking between your devices) is accessible from the main navigation. Threat Protection Lite (DNS-based blocking) is always-on by default. Split tunneling is available in Settings > Split tunneling. The Windows app supports both system-wide kill switch and per-application kill switch — a granularity most competitors lack. Tested on Windows 10 and 11 without any compatibility issues.
Additional platforms include macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and select router firmware. The Windows client is the primary focus of this review, tested on both Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2.
Limitations
No VPN is perfect. Here are the specific weaknesses we identified during our 2026 testing period:
- Short-term plans are expensive ($12.99/mo on monthly) — significant value only appears on 2-year subscriptions.
- Some P2P-optimised servers showed inconsistent performance during our off-peak tests; speeds dropped by up to 30 percent on three occasions.
- The auto-reconnect feature occasionally adds a 2–4 second delay when switching networks, which can briefly expose traffic.
Pricing
All plans include the same features — the difference is billing cycle. Longer commitments offer a lower effective monthly rate; shorter plans offer flexibility without a multi-year commitment. Prices shown are approximate and may vary by region and promotion.
| Plan | Price/Month | Devices | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $12.99/mo | 10 | Most flexible |
| 1-Year | $4.99/mo | 10 | Good value |
| 2-Year | $3.09/mo | 10 | Best per-month rate |
Verdict
NordVPN ranks #2 for its unmatched server coverage, PwC-audited no-logs policy, and the fastest absolute speeds in our test suite.
