Speed Performance
McAfee Safe Connect reached 180 Mbps download and 120 Mbps upload on our 1 Gbps test line in London. Latency to the nearest server measured 42ms — solid for everyday use. We test each provider across four server locations at both peak (6–9 PM local) and off-peak (2–4 AM) hours and average the results.
| Server Location | Download | Upload | Latency |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK (nearest) | 181 Mbps | 122 Mbps | 42 ms |
| US East | 155 Mbps | 105 Mbps | 110 ms |
| Germany | 168 Mbps | 115 Mbps | 55 ms |
| Australia | 88 Mbps | 60 Mbps | 302 ms |
McAfee Safe Connect delivered the slowest speeds of all 13 VPNs we tested. At 181 Mbps on the UK server, performance is roughly 2.5× slower than ZoogVPN on the same connection. Australian and Asian servers were particularly poor, often dropping below 90 Mbps. The lack of WireGuard is the primary technical explanation — OpenVPN alone cannot match the performance of modern protocol implementations.
Streaming Performance
McAfee Safe Connect's streaming performance was poor across all platforms. Netflix US authentication was inconsistent — only three of seven attempts succeeded. BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Hulu were blocked in every test session. The limited server pool (400+ servers, 23 countries) means popular US and UK server IPs are quickly blocklisted by streaming platforms. McAfee Safe Connect is not a viable streaming VPN.

Security
McAfee Safe Connect uses OpenVPN with AES-256 encryption. The kill switch feature is present and worked correctly in our tests. However, the privacy policy explicitly states that connection metadata including timestamps and session duration may be logged — a fundamental departure from the no-logs standard maintained by every other VPN in our top 10. For users whose threat model includes metadata analysis, this is disqualifying.
Privacy & Logging Policy
McAfee Safe Connect is operated by McAfee LLC, incorporated in the United States. The United States is a founding 5-Eyes member and home to expansive surveillance programmes including those authorised under FISA and EO 12333. US-jurisdiction VPNs are subject to National Security Letters and gag orders that can compel disclosure without judicial oversight. Unlike every other VPN in our top 12, McAfee Safe Connect's privacy policy explicitly states that connection metadata including session timestamps and duration is retained. This data is associated with your McAfee account. McAfee is owned by Symphony Technology Group (STG), a private equity firm — the data governance implications of this ownership chain are not transparent. Safe Connect is not appropriate for users with privacy requirements beyond basic ISP hiding.
Windows App Experience
McAfee Safe Connect's Windows interface is integrated with the McAfee Security Dashboard rather than being a standalone application. This makes it easy to find for existing McAfee subscribers but awkward for VPN-only users who must navigate through the security suite to reach VPN controls. The VPN toggle is a simple on/off switch with country selection. Protocol selection, kill switch settings, and split tunneling are all absent. The app connects automatically when McAfee detects an unsecured network — a convenience feature, though the lack of manual protocol control means users accept whatever OpenVPN configuration the app chooses.
Additional platforms include macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and select router firmware. The Windows client is the primary focus of this review, tested on both Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2.
Limitations
No VPN is perfect. Here are the specific weaknesses we identified during our 2026 testing period:
- Logs connection metadata including timestamps, session duration, and bandwidth — this fundamentally undermines the core privacy promise of a VPN service.
- Only 400+ servers across 23 countries — the smallest footprint of any VPN in our ranking; entire regions (Middle East, Africa, most of Asia) are unrepresented.
- OpenVPN only — WireGuard and IKEv2 are absent, meaning Windows users miss out on the speed gains and modern cryptographic improvements these protocols bring.
Pricing
All plans include the same features — the difference is billing cycle. Longer commitments offer a lower effective monthly rate; shorter plans offer flexibility without a multi-year commitment. Prices shown are approximate and may vary by region and promotion.
| Plan | Price/Month | Devices | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $7.99/mo | 5 | Most flexible |
| 1-Year | $2.99/mo | 5 | Good value |
| 2-Year | Not available | — | — |
Verdict
McAfee Safe Connect ranks last; it logs user data, offers limited server coverage, and provides the slowest speeds in our test group — only suited for existing McAfee subscribers.
