Speed Performance

Private Internet Access reached 580 Mbps download and 420 Mbps upload on our 1 Gbps test line in London. Latency to the nearest server measured 18ms — solid for everyday use. We test each provider across four server locations at both peak (6–9 PM local) and off-peak (2–4 AM) hours and average the results.

PIA defaults to AES-128-GCM cipher (configurable to AES-256 in settings); we tested with the stronger cipher enabled, which reduced speeds by approximately 12 percent. The sheer volume of servers (35,000+) means load balancing is effective — we rarely encountered a congested server. OpenVPN on the same UK endpoint delivered around 280 Mbps, significantly slower than WireGuard.

Streaming Performance

PIA's streaming performance has improved in recent years but remains inconsistent on certain platforms. Netflix US and Hulu work reliably. Amazon Prime Video UK passed on most sessions. BBC iPlayer was problematic — roughly 40 percent of test sessions were blocked, despite connecting to UK servers — suggesting IIP range blocks affecting some server pools. Users who primarily stream UK content may find better reliability elsewhere.

Security

PIA's open-source apps allow independent code inspection — anyone can review exactly how encryption is implemented. The default cipher is AES-128-GCM (fast and computationally efficient); users can upgrade to AES-256-GCM in settings. The MACE ad and malware blocker operates at the DNS level. PIA has defended its no-logs policy in multiple court cases — subpoenas produced no useful user data — but the jurisdiction remains a concern for high-threat-model users. PIA's no-logs policy has been tested in real legal proceedings on multiple occasions — subpoenas from the FBI and other agencies produced no usable user data because the logs simply do not exist. Windows App Experience

PIA's Windows app offers the most configuration depth of any client we tested. Users can select between AES-128 and AES-256, choose cipher mode (GCM or CBC), enable PFS, set custom DNS servers, configure a SOCKS5 proxy, and adjust the MTU. This flexibility is valuable for advanced users but overwhelming for beginners. The interface uses a dark theme with green accent colours. The MACE ad blocker is a toggle in the main privacy settings screen. Split tunneling supports both app-based and IP-based exclusions.

Additional platforms include macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and select router firmware. The Windows client is the primary focus of this review, tested on both Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 23H2.

Limitations

No VPN is perfect. Here are the specific weaknesses we identified during our 2026 testing period:

• USA jurisdiction (5-Eyes) remains the biggest concern — court subpoenas could compel data disclosure, and US intelligence agencies operate broad surveillance programmes.
• The Windows app interface prioritises customisation over usability; new users often find the protocol and encryption selector confusing.
• BBC iPlayer and some European streaming services block PIA's IP ranges intermittently — not reliable for regular UK content access.

Pricing
